New Zealand to ban credit cards for gambling ahead of online market licensing

The New Zealand government has announced a ban on the use of credit cards for gambling as part of its preparations for launching a regulated online casino and sportsbook market.

The new restrictions will apply not only to direct credit card deposits but also to indirect funding methods, such as topping up digital wallets using credit-based funds. The move is aimed at reducing player harm and strengthening responsible gambling standards.

According to projections, up to 15 licensed operators are expected to enter the New Zealand market by the end of 2026. License fees alone are estimated to generate approximately $25 million in revenue, with operators also required to pay a 16% tax on gross gaming revenue (GGR).

These measures underline New Zealand’s strategy to build a transparent, well-regulated, and socially responsible online gambling market with a strong focus on consumer protection and long-term sustainability.
